One of the most painful things for me to hear about is how brutally people beat themselves up with their own minds. And it’s so common.

Abrasive thoughts can have tremendous power over us if we have not trained ourselves to experience them differently.

Next time you find your mind caught in a self-berating negative spiral, imagine that those thoughts are coming from a little child. Imagine seeing that child sitting on the playground saying to themselves what you are saying to yourself.

Your likely instinct in these situations will be to offer consolation, to care for the child, to give them a hug.

This is the relationship you want to take with your own mind. Offer compassion. Offer care. Give your mind a hug.

The more you do this, the easier it becomes. Over time, thoughts lose their grip on you.
